Looking for Adventure?

We’ve added over a dozen new items to satisfy your adventurous side this summer. If you want to be reckless, wild, and experience some over-the-top excitement that you will probably live to regret, go all out with the Hangry Reaper, an explosive version of the old-fashioned American burger, topped with fried jalapenos and thick-cut bacon, plus melted pepper jack, lettuce and tomato, and a sauce infused with California Reaper, one of the hottest peppers in the world.

Need some excitement in your burger, but not quite that much? Try the new Root Beer Burger, with bleu cheese, bacon, onion rings and a sauce inspired by Sprecher’s Root Beer. Want your adventure to be meaningful and contribute something to your community? Try the Big Bleu Line Burger, with bleu cheese, bacon, lettuce, red onion slices and mayo, and we’ll contribute one dollar from every one of these Bleu Line burgers to the City of Sullivan Police Department.

And burgers aren’t the only thing that’s new at the grill. We are dazzling your taste buds with all kinds of chicken choices. Pollo, poulet, hahnchen, frango…we may have to learn it in every language just to be able to describe all the options we have for you! Start with our Sweet Chili Boneless Wings, covered with our wicked sweet and tangy chili sauce. Then move on to the Honey Hot Boneless Wings, a sweet and spicy combination that will leave your taste buds begging for more! Or for something a little more old-school, try our BBQ Grilled Chicken in either an entrée or a sandwich.

Love chicken, but want some fruits and vegetables in your meal? We’ve got it! Our new Honey Apple & Walnut Salad features grilled chicken with feta cheese crumbles and our in-house balsamic vinaigrette. For something simpler, try the Crispy Chicken Salad, with fresh chicken on lettuce & cheddar cheese, croutons and dressing of your choice. Or get lost in our dreamy Blueberry Field Salad, with blueberries, mandarin oranges, feta cheese, and fresh, antibiotic-free grilled chicken, topped with our in-house blueberry balsamic vinaigrette.

You can also order one of our new chicken entrees and add your choice of sides. In addition to the new BBQ Grilled Chicken, we are now offering a Bacon Cheddar Chicken entrée, featuring a grilled chicken breast topped with farm fresh bacon pieces, red onions, sautéed mushrooms and smothered in cheddar cheese. Or for supreme deliciousness, try our new Bourbon Glazed Chicken, a juicy chicken breast brought to full flavor with our delectable signature Bourbon sauce and grilled over a searing open flame.

But of course, the most important thing on the grill will always be the steaks. You knew we were saving that for last, didn’t you?

Yes, we have not one, not two, but three new steak options for you! They are already flying off the grill for our customers who have already jumped in to the adventure. First there’s the Dueling Cowboys, two flavorful thick ribeye chops to fill up any rider, and maybe even his horse. Next up is the Center Cut Flat Iron Steak, a delicious and tender steak with a deep, rich flavor, masterfully grilled and hand-seasoned. And finally, there’s the Farmland Filet, a tender and succulent, mouthwatering beef tenderloin filet with a buttery texture and grilled to perfection. Once you get started, you’ll want to try them all.

So, come on down and start your food adventure…if you dare.

Thank You

All of us here at the Acorn Grill would like to shout out a great big THANK YOU to the entire Sullivan community and the surrounding area! We are incredibly grateful for the warm welcome and positive response that we have received since opening in 2017. It has been above and beyond what we had hoped for and expected. Your support is what motivates us and makes us want to work even harder to give you great service and great food every day. We are also especially appreciative of the local businesses who have helped us and the Chamber of Commerce for everything they have done for us and for the community. Sullivan, Indiana, was definitely the right choice for our restaurant’s location, and we are so glad to be here! And most of all, thank you to all of our wonderful customers. You’re the best! Shop local; eat local, and THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Remember Root Beer?

Remember when you could get an old-fashioned root beer in a frosted mug? Do you ever find yourself wishing for those happy days? Or maybe you’re too young to remember and wish you’d had the chance to try one. Well those wishes are being granted right here in Sullivan! The Acorn Grill is bringing it back, just in time to for spring and summer. Relive the days when every town had a soda shop or a summertime root beer drive-in. We have found an awesome root beer supplier from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, – Sprecher Brewery, and we can’t wait for you to try what we’ve found. It may not be Schotz Brewery, and there’s no Hasenpfeffer involved, but we promise they make an awesome root beer! You can check out Sprecher and their amazing root beer selection on their website:  https://www.sprecherbrewery.com/soda.php.

Not only are we bringing back root beer, but it will be served fresh, on tap from a keg. And for a little more nostalgia and great taste, we’ll be serving it up extra cold in special frosted 16 oz and 24 oz jar mugs. You can even get an old-fashioned root beer float! We’ll top your root beer with scoops of delicious vanilla ice cream and maybe even a little whipped cream and a cherry on top. But don’t get so excited that you spill your root beer; that would make you a schlemiel. And if you’re the person it gets spilled on, you’re a schlimazel. If you have any idea why the idea of a brewery in Wisconsin would make us say things like schlemiel, schlimazel, and hasenpfeffer (incorporated), you’re old enough to remember on tap root beer. If not, bring your mom or grandma for a root beer float and let her explain it to you. She will think you are the coolest thing since poodle skirts and black leather jackets. She may even give you two thumbs up. So, don’t wait, come on down and try the old-fashioned treat that’s the brand-new craze at the Acorn Grill! Aayyy!!!

GO TEAM!

Looking back on February 2018, it wasn’t just the month for romance and lovers but also the month for sports lovers. The first weekend kicked it off with the big game and the ultimate football weekend, and the last couple of days finished strong with the start of the Indiana high school boys’ sectional tournament. In between, we had the 2018 Winter Olympics, the Daytona 500, and the girls’ basketball tournament season. And now, we’re headed into the mayhem that is March basketball. Plus, we’ve had just enough warm days to get the baseball fans dreaming about spring training. This is probably the most exciting time of the year to be a sports fan.

One of the best things about sports is the team spirit that it builds among both the athletes and the fans. And at the Acorn Grill, we strive for that same team spirit. It takes a great team working together to make each guest’s visit a positive experience. When you first walk into the building, you are going to notice the appearance and cleanliness of the doorway, the entrance, the restaurant overall. Our team wants that first impression to be a good one. The next important part of your experience is how you are greeted and how staff begin assisting you in the restaurant. This requires our team to have a great attitude and to also to be alert to who is coming in the restaurant.

Once you are welcomed in, we need to be accurate in taking your order and answering questions, and then the wait staff have to communicate your order clearly to the cooks. Attention to detail and great communication skills are needed for the team members who are waiting on you. And then the cook’s skills come into play – it takes mad skills to be able to turn out great food every single order. And if you call in your order or order online, our delivery staff have to be prompt, courteous and cheerful to make your experience complete. And of course, the bill has to be rung up correctly!

And then the dishes all have to be washed – the glasses, plates, and silverware all need to be sanitized and sparkling clean. Behind the scenes, supplies have to be ordered and put away when they are delivered. Staff have to scheduled at the right times. Bathrooms have to be cleaned and stocked. Food has to be properly stored. All temperatures for cooling and heating have to be perfect. The payroll has to be processed, and the equipment has to be cleaned and maintained.

If anyone on the team drops the ball, the whole process is disrupted. Each part of the process is important, and every person’s role is valuable and makes a difference. That’s why it truly takes a team to run a restaurant, and at the Acorn Grill, we have an awesome one! We are so grateful for everyone who has come to work with us here at the grill, and we enjoy working with such a great group of restaurant professionals. If you haven’t met the team yet, come on down! We can’t wait for the chance to make you fans of the Acorn Grill!

Sugar & Spice

Did you know that Indiana has a State Pie? Can you guess what it is? Here’s a clue – we’re whipping some up right here at the Acorn Grill, and they’re full of sugar and spice and everything nice. Did you guess sugar cream pie? This Hoosier favorite, a sweet vanilla custard with nutmeg on top, is usually believed to have started in Quaker or Amish communities in the early 1800s. However, since a version of it called tarte au sucre is also popular in parts of Europe and Canada, especially northern France and Quebec, it may have arrived in Indiana with French settlers in the 1600s. Another name for it is Desperation Pie, because it could be made without fruit and with common, inexpensive ingredients. Mothers who were desperate to keep their families fed and happy with whatever they already had on hand in the kitchen could fall back on this creamy dessert. Over time it has become known as Midwestern Pie or Hoosier Pie, with the Indiana State Senate designating it as the state pie in 2009.  Whatever it is called and wherever it came from, it’s delicious!  It will make you desperate for another slice! So, whether there was an old sugar pie recipe in your grandma’s kitchen too or you want to try it for the first time, visit the Acorn Grill today for a yummy slice of Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie tradition.

Comfort Food

Temperatures dropping, leaves falling in the cold rain, last of the watermelons and summer flowers replaced by pumpkins and mums – this is the time of year when even warm afternoons turn into dark, brisk evenings and we come inside seeking light, warmth, and comfort.

And nothing is more comforting than good old-fashioned comfort food. Here at the Acorn Grill that means mashed potatoes and gravy served next to sizzling, perfectly cooked steaks or a thick cut of Black Forest ham; beef manhattans the way you remember them from childhood, or the Country Fried Chicken Platter – house cut and hand breaded all-natural chicken, deep fried to a golden brown and smothered with peppered country gravy.

Or maybe you want to take comfort to a whole other level: Grandma’s Chicken & Dumplings, served with green beans and corn or mac and cheese. Does it get any better than that? It might, if you add fresh bread and rolls smothered in melted butter and delicious pies baked right here at the restaurant. Pecan pie adds just the right amount of crunchy sweetness, or you can try the sugar cream or peanut butter pie. And of course, nothing says fall more than s’mores by a fire – sit by the firelight at Acorn Grill and try our Fireside S’mores Brownie. You’ll understand why this dessert earned a name based on people asking for “some more.”

So, don’t stand out in the cold – come on inside! Join us by the fireplace, get warm and cozy, and enjoy some of your favorite old-fashioned comfort food at the Acorn Grill tonight! We’ll see you by the fire!

Mother’s Day Memories

As children, and as young adults raising our children, we often look forward to the big events and think that those will be the memories we cherish later: the big ballgame, the first day of school, the family vacation to Florida, the weekend at Holiday World or the zoo.

But the older we get, the more the memories of the little things rise to the surface as the most important. And so many of those things revolve around the family meals: the favorite uncle carving the turkey, the happiness everyone felt when your dad lit up the grill, watching your mother make meatloaf, bake bread or create her favorite dessert, making cookies together or learning to make your first simple meals. The best memory of all may be just sitting around the table together, whether you were laughing, arguing, or just trying to force yourself to take a bite of something new that your parents wanted you to try, after assuring you it would taste like chicken. You probably had a favorite meal, and your parents always seemed to know just when to make it, whether you were celebrating or in need of comfort. It may have just something as simple as making sure there were orange push-ups in the freezer when you were a kid, or pizza rolls on the day of your final exam.

Whatever the memories, your mother probably had a big role in creating them. Whether she shopped for the groceries, kept the kitchen clean, fired up the grill, or made a gourmet meal for your birthdays (okay, it was spaghetti, but that’s what you wanted), she was there. And now it’s your turn to say thank you. What better way to say it that to give her a work free night of family memories around the table? Bring her to Acorn Grill with the whole family this weekend and have a memory around the table together one more time. We’ll even provide free dessert for Mom – she’s earned it!
